STIMULANTS & PERFORMANCE: WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM BASEBALL?
In 2006, to go with its crackdown on steroids, Major League Baseball banned stimulants, too. That is, except for players with medical conditions like Attention Deficit Disorder. In 2007, the number of major leaguers claiming ADD exemptions jumped from 28 -- to 103.
Is this a ploy to get access to Ritalin or Adderall? If so, why do players use stimulants? To fight fatigue? To boost motivation? To sharpen concentration? To boost bat discipline? Dr. Allan Lans -- Mets team psychiatrist from 1989 to 2003 -- will step up to the plate.
Thursday, May 8, 6:30pm to 9pm. Seafarers & International House, 123 East 15th Street at Irving Place (near Union Square). Sponsor: Manhattan Adult Attention Deficit Disorder Support Group.
